Jaeja Man
English Icelandic
Once upon a time, in a tiny village somewhere between a volcano, a sheep, and another volcano, a baby was born. He looked like any other Icelandic baby. But when the moment came for his very first word, he did not say “mama,” “papa,” or even “skyr.” Instead, he opened his little mouth and calmly whispered: “Jæja.” The mom and dad fainted. The sheep nodded approvingly. As he grew up, something remarkable happened. He discovered that one word was enough for every situation in life. Stubbed his toe? “Jæja.” Lost his homework? “Jæja.” Sheep escaped again? “Jæja.” Teachers tried to teach him new words, but he simply shrugged, said “Jæja,” . And over time something curious happened. People stopped wondering why he spoke that way and started wondering why they didn’t speak that way. Storm coming? “Jæja.” Forgot your lunch? “Jæja.” Midlife crisis? A very confident “Jæja.” And to this day, 'Jæja' is an inseparable part of every Icelander’s life, though nobody remembers anymore where it truly came from.
